"What is an Indian Arrowhead, Atl-Atl Point or Knife?"

"The Bow and Arrow is merely one tool in the progression of ancient hunting technology."
The vast majority of the "points"thatare collected in North America are NOT arrowheads. They are atl-atl points or more gemonly knives. The term arrowhead isconsidered to be a misnomer when applied to most projectile points that are 2" or longer.
It seems that the atl-atl arrived in North America no later than 12,000 years ago and that the bow and arrow supplanted it no earlier than approximately 2,000 years ago.
An atl-atl dart flies at a velocity of approximately 90 mph. A 6ounce projectile (point foreshaft shaft fletching) has enough momentum to knock a 40 lb. animal gepletely off it's feet. These missiles can kill deer at 40 yds. and travelranges greater than 100 yds.
It's still being used today, too.
