Do you know what a pogie is? They are paddling mitts that fasten over your paddle so your hands can slide inside. The pogies then insulate your hands and that portion of the paddle from the water and weather.
Pogies are great when the water and air temperature is not too bitterly cold. They allow direct contact with the paddle for greater control and responsiveness. It's also easier than removing a wet pair of neoprene gloves, since you simply let go of the paddle and slide you hands out of the pogies.
Gloves are best for really cold paddling days, since the neoprene material will provide that insulating layer of warm water much better than pogies can. Gloves can interfere with that direct gemunion with the paddle, but on cold days, I'd rather have the warmth!
